Tonsils and adenoids, which are parts of the lymph nodes and our first line of defense against infections after birth, are located at the starting point of the respiratory and digestive systems. They perform the duty of defending the body against inhaled air and ingested food by producing protective substances called antibodies.

The adenoid, located in the nasopharynx just behind the nose, forms the first defense barrier against infections originating from the nasal passage and initiates the cellular defense response against bacteria and viruses that reach the body. As a part of the immune system, the adenoid contributes to the formation of lymphocytes, the cells that keep our immune system strong in the fight against bacteria and viruses. During this reaction, its size may increase, and after a while, its enlarged size, in addition to its contributions, can lead to various problems.

Due to the excessive growth of the adenoid, the following complaints and diseases may occur:

  • Nasal congestion

  • Snoring, Sleep Apnea

  • Frequent recurring upper respiratory tract infections

  • Sleeping with the mouth open

  • Disorders in tooth, face, and jaw development

  • Frequent middle ear infections

  • Hearing loss

  • Growth and development retardation

  • Nocturnal enuresis (bedwetting)

  • Persistent nasal discharge and sinusitis

  • Bad breath

  • Loss of taste and smell

  • Loss of appetite

  • Speech disorders
  • If the excessive growth of the adenoid, which generally starts from the age of 2, leads to the complaints listed above, it needs to be removed through an operation.

Tonsils, on the other hand, are the other lymphoid organs located on both sides of the throat, serving as part of the immune system against infections. They are small in newborns and grow due to infections. Due to the excessive growth of tonsils, the frequency of infections in children increases. If these infections occur 5 or more times a year, and problems such as snoring and sleep apnea arise, tonsil surgery may be necessary.

  • Conditions Requiring Tonsillectomy

Today, tonsillectomy is performed very easily and with risk factors eliminated. However, many families are ambivalent about whether their young children should have surgery.

    Tonsillectomy is recommended if:

  • The child has had more than 6 febrile tonsillitis episodes in the last year

  • The tonsil infection causes febrile seizures

  • Abscess formation is observed in the tonsils

  • There are problems with snoring, sleeping with the mouth open, eating, and swallowing

  • There is jaw development distortion due to tonsil enlargement

  • Tonsil infections do not respond to medication
  • Conditions Requiring Adenoidectomy

Adenoid problems, just like tonsil problems, can be treated comfortably with surgical intervention today.

The situations requiring adenoidectomy are as follows:

  • Difficulty in breathing

  • Sleeping with the mouth open and snoring

  • Jaw development disorder due to adenoid enlargement

  • Chronic middle ear infection and fluid accumulation

  • Recurrent sinusitis
  • At What Age Range Are Tonsil and Adenoid Surgeries Performed?

Adenoid-tonsil enlargements and infections are most common between the ages of 3 and 9. Tonsil and adenoid surgeries are preferably performed after the age of 3. However, if a baby experiences sleep apnea, the surgery can be performed at an earlier age.

When Should Tonsil and Adenoid Surgery Be Performed?

Generally, people consult a doctor more frequently with complaints of tonsil and adenoid enlargement during the school's mid-term break.

Tonsil and adenoid surgery can be performed in any season, but it is not highly preferred during the summer months due to the hot weather. The child's fluid intake may be restricted due to post-operative pain.

    Our Other Services: Laryngitis

For this reason, spring and winter months are more appropriate times for the surgery.

What Are the Conditions Requiring Tonsil and Adenoid Surgery?

    Tonsils should be removed if:

  • tonsil infections occur 7 times in one year,

  • 5 times per year for two consecutive years,

  • 3 times per year for three consecutive years.
  • In other words, if the child has very frequent infections or experiences sleep apnea at night, it is time for tonsil and adenoid surgery. The most fundamental factor in planning the surgery is the obstructive enlargement of the tonsils and adenoids.

In this case, surgery should be sought without delay.

    Tonsil and Adenoid Surgery Procedure

Tonsil and adenoid surgery in Antalya is performed under general anesthesia. After the tonsil and adenoid are removed through an incision inside the mouth, the patient usually stays in the hospital for 1 day. Although there is no seasonal factor for the surgery, there is no risk of getting pharyngitis more easily after the operation.
